Directions to the Magic Café

Streetmap.co.uk online map

The directions given below generally assume that people will be coming from the direction of Oxford town centre. For those travelling from elsewhere, it's recommended that you make your way to Magdalen Roundabout, also known as "The Plain", and follow the directions from there. The Magdalen Roundabout is just to the east of Magdalen Bridge and the River Cherwell, and is the point where the High Street, St. Clement's Street, Cowley Road and Iffley Road all meet.

Magdalen Street runs between the Cowley and Iffley roads, about fifteen minutes' walk south-east of Magdalen Bridge.

By foot or by bike:
Walk down the Cowley Road for approx. 15 minutes, until you see the bingo hall on your right. Alternatively, walk down Iffley Road until you see the Magdalen Arms pub on your left. Turn into Magdalen Road; the Magic Café is about halfway down.

By car:
Traffic on the Cowley Road is often atrocious. A more sensible bet is to go down Iffley Road (third exit from the Plain roundabout if you're coming from the High Street) and find somewhere nearby to park.

By bus:
For those coming by bus, the #1 and #5 go down the Cowley road from the town centre; the #3 and #4 go down Iffley Road. Ask for the "Magdalen Arms" stop on Iffley Road or the "Bingo hall" on Cowley Road. Buses cost approx. £1.60 from the town centre.

From the Station:
From the train station, a taxi will cost approx. £4-8 pounds, and might be worthwhile if you're carrying a lot of gear or have more than two people. Alternatively, walk out of the station forecourt and turn left into Frideswide Square; continue straight on the left-hand side of the road as the square turns into Hythe Bridge Street. Follow the street up until you see a large car park on your right, then cross the road at the lights and turn left onto George Street. Continue up George Street until you reach a large crossroads with bus stops on your left; turn right onto Cornmarket Street. At the end of Cornmarket, you will be at the Carfax crossroads, where you can either take a bus (as above) or turn left onto High Street and walk to the Plain (AKA Magdalen Roundabout), then follow the directions above.

The #5 and #4 buses also go direct from the station forecourt and Frideswide Square respectively. There are fewer buses from the station area than from Carfax.

Directions to the Black Swan pub

Streetmap.co.uk online map - Multimap.com online map

We used to meet for Saturday games at the Black Swan pub on the corner of Crown Street and St. Mary's road, usually at 10am or 11am (the pub is one of the few in the area that opens at 10).

It's covered in trees, grass and flowers, and is fairly hard to miss!

Crown Street is a small road which runs off the Cowley Road, about ten minutes' walk south-east of Magdalen Bridge.

By foot or by bike:
Walk down the Cowley Road for approx. 5-10 minutes, until you see a shop called Honest Stationary on your left. Crown Street is across the road, on the right; the Black Swan is at the end of that road.

By car:
Traffic on the Cowley Road is often atrocious. A more sensible bet might be to go down Iffley Road (third exit from the Plain roundabout if you're coming from the High Street) until you see Bullingdon Road or James Street on your left, turn up there and come onto St. Mary's (third right on James, third left on Bullingdon). There is limited parking directly outside the pub.

By bus:
For those coming by bus, the #1 and #5 go down the Cowley road from the town centre; get off at the second stop after the Plain roundabout and walk on, or the third stop and walk back to find Crown Street. Buses cost approx. £1.60 from the town centre.

From the Station:
From the train station, a taxi will cost approx. £4-6 pounds, and might be worthwhile if you're carrying a lot of gear or have more than two people. Alternatively, walk out of the station forecourt and turn left into Frideswide Square; continue straight on the left-hand side of the road as the square turns into Hythe Bridge Street. Directions to the Angel & Greyhound pub

We used to meet at the Angel & Greyhound pub on St. Clements'. We don't anymore, but it's conceivable we might in the future, and we usually adjourn to this pub after the LARP is done for the day.

The Angel & Greyhound pub is a short distance down St. Clement's Street, just to the east of Magdalen Bridge. It has a number of tables outside, at both the front and the back, and a pay-and-display car park at the rear. If the day's event is cancelled for some reason, then the pub also owns a number of board games for the use of its patrons with which we've been known to while away the afternoon. Food (chips, burgers, etc.) is served in the evening.

It's covered in trees, grass and flowers, and is fairly hard to miss!

By foot or by bike:
head east from the town centre over Magdalen Bridge. At the Magdalen Roundabout take the first clockwise exit (i.e. the one straight ahead and slightly to the left as you come over the bridge), which is St. Clement's Street. The pub is a short distance along here on the left, past Clementine's and Comics Showcase. Just look for the place with the tables out front surrounded by a low cast iron fence with the 'Angel & Greyhound' pub sign on a pole.

By car:
For those who are driving there is a convenient public car park just behind the pub. This car park is pay-and-display, be aware that people have been known to receive tickets even while just waiting in the pub for half an hour. If coming from the direction of the Magdalen Roundabout, after leaving the roundabout there is a turning to the left, then a pelican crossing, then another turning to the left, all spaced fairly close together - it's the second turning that leads to the car park. Note that this second turning is actually two roads side by side - to get to the car park take the second of these roads (since the first one leads to an annexe of Queen's College).

By bus:
For those coming by bus the #7, #13 and #15 buses run from the town centre to St. Clement's and cost about £1 each - the #7 leaves from Queen Street, while the #13 and #15 leave from St. Aldate's. The St. Clement's bus stop is a little way past the pub - after alighting you will need to walk back in the direction of the town centre a short distance to reach it.
