Directions to St. Hilda's College bar

St. Hilda's College is a short distance down Cowley Place, just to the south of Magdalen Bridge. Go down Cowley Place until the road turns to the right, and the porter's lodge is on your right just around the corner. The College bar is near to the porter's lodge (where you enter the college) and easy to find.

The directions given below generally assume that people will be coming from the direction of the town centre. For those travelling from elsewhere, I recommend that you make your way to Magdalen Roundabout, also known as "The Plain", and follow the directions from there. The Magdalen Roundabout is just to the east of Magdalen Bridge and the River Cherwell, and is the point where the High Street, St. Clement's Street, Cowley Road and Iffley Road all meet. It's fairly hard to miss!

Directions to the bar can be found at the bottom of this page, first there are directions to St. Hilda's College itself.

By foot or bike:
From the town centre, head east over Magdalen Bridge. At the Magdalen Roundabout, take the first exit anticlockwise, (i.e. to your right,) which is Cowley Place. Obviously, you'll have to go all the way round the roundabout to reach it if coming by bike, in which case it's the fourth exit clockwise.
Cowley Place (not to be confused with Cowley Road!) is distinguishable from the other exits by its lack of pubs and shops, and by several telephone kiosks.

By car:
There is usually space to park along Cowley Place, which has 24-hour parking bays from Monday to Saturday.
Be careful not to park in the Magdalen College School car park opposite the college, or on any of the double yellow lines outside the college, or in the 'residents only' parking bays near the roundabout, since the clampers in the area are rumoured to be particularly harsh.
If parking space cannot be found along Cowley Place, then I recommend that you try the public car park behind the Angel & Greyhound pub, directions to which can be found here.

By bus:
For those coming by bus, you can take the #1, #3, #4 and #5 buses from the town centre, all of which cost under a pound. All four services leave from Queen Street. The #1 and #5 buses head down Cowley Road to Blackbird Leys, and the #3 and #4 buses head down Iffley Road to Rose Hill. In each case, get off at the first stop after the Magdalen Roundabout, head back towards the roundabout, and follow the directions on foot from there.

Finding the bar:
As you leave the porter's lodge, turn right (so that you're facing away from the main gates). Ahead of you (across a tarmacked area with a cobbled patch in the middle) is a large building labelled 'Hall Building' with a pair of double doors in the centre of the ground floor. These doors are wooden with glass panels, and open onto two staircases, one going up and one going down. Go through these doors and take the staircase that leads down. At the bottom of the stairs there is a single wooden door with glass panels straight ahead of you, which leads to the College bar.
