As time goes on, characters grow and develop - going on adventures, spending time in training and study, learning new skills and abilities, and generally becoming more powerful and influential. Part of this development is represented by the development of a character's personality, history, experiences and interactions with other characters, the accumulation of material rewards such as hexa and magickal items, and advancement in Rank within their Guild(s). But a system is also needed to govern how characters develop their skills, and in FLRP this progression is measured using 'experience points' (commonly abbreviated to 'xp').
You gain experience points for going on FLRPs, (whether you are playing, monstering or running the FLRP,) for providing lifts to and from Shotover and for writing articles for the Outpost Post newsletter. In Character, these xp reflect a combination of time spent between adventures training and studying, and the understanding gained through actual first hand combat and adventuring experience.
The usual experience awards are as follows:
There are two ways to spend experience points - Guild training and private study. Guild training is usually provided by one of Outpost's four Adventuring Guilds.
(A few rare and fortunate characters may be able to obtain training at Guild rates from other sources if they can provide a good background reason for it - this should be discussed with the FLRP organiser.)
Private study involves developing skills through your own efforts and study without the help of Guild instructors - while it is possible to learn almost any skill privately, it is more difficult and time consuming to do so, hence learning a skill privately tends to cost more xp than learning it through a Guild.
A table of the costs by Guild for the various skills can be found here.
When training in a Guild, you swap a certain number of xp for levels of Guild training. The first level in a Guild costs 10xp, and gives you ten Guild training points (henceforth abbreviated to Gtp). Subsequent levels cost 5xp each, and provide 5 Gtp per level. Gtp are used to purchase skills at the cost given in the skills table under that Guild (for example, one level of the Armour Wearing skill costs 2 Gtp for Guardians, 3 Gtp for Scouts or Lorewardens and 5 Gtp for Elementalists). You may spend Gtp to buy any skill for which a cost is listed in the appropriate Guild's column.
(Note that Guild levels, Guild Ranks and character levels are entirely unrelated. Guild levels are an OoC measure of how much training a character has done with a particular Guild. Guild Ranks are an IC measure of how widely known and respected a character is within a Guild, and the titles they are allowed to refer to themselves by - these are awarded IC by the Guild Heads, as decided by the GMs and the FLRP Organiser. Character levels are a general OoC measure of how experienced a character is and how well they can resist spells and miracles.)
Example
Barnabus the Bard has 12 xp to spend. He currently has 1 level of training in the Lorewarden's Guild. Assuming he wishes to spend 10 of his xp on Guild training rather than private study, he may either take levels 2 and 3 of training in the Lorewarden's Guild, or a first level of training in another Guild.
Now, since he is a dedicated Lorewarden, he decides to stick with the Lorewarden's Guild. Buying levels 2 and 3 of training gives him 10 Gtp to spend (5 per level).Looking at the skill list, he decides he feels like increasing his spiritual prowess. He purchases a level in Miracle Learning (Own Alignment) for 2 Gtp, and two levels in Enhanced Power - Spirit for 1 Gtp each = 2 Gtp in total.
Recently, he's been getting a little battered, so he decides to get a level of Armour Wearing for 3 Gtp. (Note that this is in the Guardian skills section. This just means that Guardians find it easiest to learn, but Lorewardens can still buy it by paying the Lorewarden prices.) He will also need to go shopping soon, since although he now has the skill to wear some armour he still needs to actually go and buy a set of armour for himself before he can gain any useful bonuses from it.
And since he's a bard, it's only appropriate that he know some legends, so he decides to get a level of Legend Lore for 3 Gtp. That comes to a grand total of 10 Gtp! He has purchased:
Skill Name Level Cost Miracle Learning (Own Alignment) 1 2 Enhanced Power - Spirit 2 2 Armour Wearing 1 3 Legend Lore 1 2
A character may buy levels in two different Adventuring Guilds without restriction. When joining another Guild after their first, a character starts with a Guild Rank of 1 (Apprentice) in that Guild.
If a character wishes to buy levels in a third Guild, they must first discuss it with the FLRP Organiser. Joining a third Guild will usually require a character to renounce their membership of one of their other Guilds, or to perform an exceptional service for the Guild Head of the Guild they wish to join, or some combination of the two.
You may also study privately. You use xp directly to do this - simply exchange the appropriate amount of xp for the cost of the skill as listed under the 'No Guild' column on the skills table.
Example
Recalling from the first example, Barnabus had 12 xp to spend, 10 of which he spent on Lorewarden's Guild training. This leaves him 2 xp to spend on private study. As a bard, it is only right that he can gain attention and holds a certain presence. Hence he decides to purchase two levels of Dramatic Entrance, at a cost of 1xp each = 2xp in total.
