
Essential Information About The World of Nocturne
There are a few things everyone should know:
- Most adventurers are based in a large city called Outpost, which has a river running through it and is ruled by a group of six people known as the Council of Aldermen.
- Most adventurers are trained by one of the four Adventuring Guilds of Outpost - these being the Guardian's Guild, the Scout's Guild, the Elementalist's Guild and the Lorewarden's Guild.
- Less than a dozen miles to the west of Outpost is a mountain range running for hundreds of miles to the north and south. On the other side of these mountains lies a huge, mostly unexplored realm of eternal night known as Nocturne - the sun, moon and stars don't shine there, and nobody really knows why.
- Although Nocturne is full of monsters and danger and other strange stuff, people go there and even settle there in order to mine the ore of 'blackalt', an uncanny and extremely valuable black metal which is found nowhere else but Nocturne.
- Nocturne is also full of strange, faintly luminescent plantlife, which provides most of the scant natural light in the realm. Some of these plants are farmed for their mystical properties.
- The main currency of Outpost and Nocturne is the 'hexa', a hexagonal coin made of blackalt.
- Some people have supernatural powers, including the ability to call upon the Elements to work magick and cast spells and the ability to call upon the gods and Spirits to work theurgy and perform miracles.
- There are six Elements, these being Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Light and Shadow.
- There are many other Planes of existence, the main ones being the Elemental Planes (which magick and Elementals come from), the Spirit Planes (which theurgy, Spirits and undead creatures come from) and the Nether Planes (which dæmons come from).
- In addition to humans, there are a number of other intelligent races around in considerable numbers - the main ones being the tall and sinister Iaché, the quick and ratlike Ratkin, the strong and snakelike Liasha, the small and vicious Night-goblins and the dark and mysterious Drow.
- And, armed with the above essential knowledge, you're now ready to set out to make your name and fortune!
